Three Scientific Methods to Predict Your Child's Future Height ✅
19 November 2025
Height not only influences a person’s appearance and self-confidence, but is also closely linked to career opportunities and social prospects. Many parents are concerned about their children’s height development. Although genetics account for 70–80% of final height, postnatal environmental factors—such as nutrition, exercise, and sleep—can still play a significant role. This article introduces three scientific methods to predict a child’s future adult height.
Methods to Predict Future Height ✅
Height prediction is not 100% accurate, but it serves as a valuable reference to help parents intervene early if needed. The following three methods are based on medical and genetic principles:
1. Bone Age Assessment (The Most Accurate Method)
By taking an X-ray of the hand (or knee) to assess bone age (the degree of skeletal maturity) and comparing it with chronological age. If bone age lags behind chronological age, it indicates greater remaining growth potential; conversely, if it is advanced, early intervention may be needed. The doctor will combine this with a growth chart to predict the remaining height gain. This method offers the highest accuracy and is suitable for children aged 6–18. In Hong Kong, it can be performed at public hospitals (e.g., the Paediatrics Department of Queen Mary Hospital) or private clinics, with costs ranging from several hundred to around one thousand Hong Kong dollars. It is recommended to arrange an assessment as early as possible if a child’s height falls below the 3rd percentile for their age, in order to diagnose any potential growth disorders.
2. Mid-Parental Height Formula
This method calculates the child’s genetic target height based on the parents’ heights, reflecting hereditary influence. The formulas are as follows:
Boy: (Father’s height + Mother’s height + 13 cm) ÷ 2 ± 7.5 cm
Girl: (Father’s height + Mother’s height – 13 cm) ÷ 2 ± 6 cm
Example: If the father is 180 cm and the mother is 160 cm, the predicted adult height for a boy is approximately 176.5 cm (with a range of ±7.5 cm).
This formula is simple and convenient—parents can calculate it at home. However, keep in mind that environmental factors can still adjust the final outcome. In Hong Kong, Maternal and Child Health Centres and private clinics commonly use this as a quick initial screening tool.
3. Genetic Testing Analysis
Using oral swab samples, this test analyzes approximately 24 known genetic loci associated with height. Combined with parental height data and environmental factors, it provides a precise adult height prediction. Some tests also examine genes related to nutrient absorption and offer personalized dietary recommendations. This method is highly technology-intensive, costs approximately several thousand Hong Kong dollars, and is available in Hong Kong through private medical institutions or genetic testing companies (such as services related to the Hong Kong Genome Institute). Although genetic factors account for 75–80% of final height, postnatal interventions can still optimize outcomes.
The above methods can be used in combination: first, make a preliminary estimate using a formula, and then perform bone age assessment or genetic testing if necessary. If a child's height development appears abnormal, parents can refer to the Child Health Services provided by the Department of Health or consult a registered paediatrician.
Pair with Tenchi GrowthMax Chews to supplement bone growth nutrients
If the prediction indicates limited growth potential, postnatal nutritional supplementation can serve as an effective aid. Tenchi GrowthMax Chews is a growth supplement developed in Japan, specifically designed for children and adolescents aged 5–22 during their developmental years. It effectively replenishes nutrients that are difficult to obtain from daily diet.
Key Ingredients and Benefits
- 9 Essential Growth Amino Acids (including lysine, threonine, arginine, etc.): These amino acids are vital for bone growth and development. They stimulate the secretion of growth hormones and promote the proliferation of bone cells.
- Patented YGF Yeast Peptide®: Derived from natural yeast, it's rich in unique small-molecule bioactive peptides that effectively enhance nutrient absorption, activate growth factors, and support the development of bones and cartilage.
- Oyster Extract: Contains abundant zinc, taurine, calcium, and various trace elements. It promotes metabolism and helps enhance bone density and support cellular repair.
- 3 Types of Growth Calcium (Eggshell Calcium, Seashell Calcium, Seaweed Calcium): Provide highly absorbable calcium to strengthen bone structure.
- Whey Protein: A high-quality protein source that works synergistically with amino acids to activate growth factors and accelerate the development of cartilage in the growth plates.
- Premium Shark Cartilage Extract: Promotes cartilage tissue regeneration and supports bone cell growth.
- Pig Cartilage Extract: Helps maintain bone health and supports the strength and durability of the overall skeletal structure.
- Vitamin Premix: Includes bone-growth-promoting vitamins D and K, along with essential B vitamins and folic acid, providing comprehensive support for healthy bone and body development in adolescents.
Scientific Benefits
- Stimulates Growth Hormone Secretion: Promotes pituitary GH release to accelerate bone cell growth.
- Delays Growth Plate Closure: Extends the growth window for adolescents, helping overcome genetic height limitations.
- Comprehensive Nutritional Support: Provides key nutrients often lacking in daily diets to support bone health.

Must-Know for Parents! Uncover 5 Key Factors to Help Kids Grow Taller and Break Genetic Limits!
Learn MoreHeight is always a major concern for parents when it comes to their children’s growth. Many believe that a child’s height is entirely determined by parental genes, as if genetics were an insurmountable barrier. However, scientific research shows that genetics only account for 60-80% of height, while the remaining 20-40% depends on environmental factors, particularly nutrition, exercise habits, and sleep quality. During a child’s critical growth phase, a balanced diet not only supports physical development but also helps children break through genetic limitations to reach greater height potential. As parents, understanding how to support your child’s growth through diet is a vital step toward ensuring their healthy future.
