Do growth hormone injections help children grow taller?
Pediatric specialist Dr.Tsui answers the effectiveness and impact.
6 March 2025

Many parents are very concerned about their children's height growth. Research shows that 80% of a child's eventual adult height is influenced by genetic factors. However, aside from genetics, height can also be affected by nutrition, sleep, and lifestyle habits. Many parents go to great lengths to help their children grow taller, such as using growth hormone injections. Now, pediatric specialist Dr.Tsui will explain what growth hormone injections are and their effectiveness and impact!
The Importance of Nutrition and Sleep

A balanced diet is the foundation for promoting children's growth, and the intake of protein is particularly important as it aids in the body's growth and development. Regarding sleep, growth hormone is secreted during deep sleep at night, especially between 10 PM and 2 AM, which is the peak secretion time. Therefore, it is recommended that children go to bed before 10 PM. Staying up too late or having poor sleep quality can negatively impact height development.
What is the Growth Plate? Criteria for the Growth Plate?
The growth plate is an important indicator of height, and children experience different growth rates as they age. Through growth charts, doctors can assess a child's developmental status, helping parents gain a comprehensive understanding of their growth rate and potential issues to watch for. In 2020, the Hong Kong Department of Health, the Pediatrics Department of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and the Department of Paediatrics and Adolescent Medicine of the University of Hong Kong jointly conducted the "Hong Kong Growth Study" and developed the latest Hong Kong growth charts for 2020. If a child's height is in the lowest 2% among 100 children of the same age, ethnicity, and gender, they are considered short stature, and it is recommended to seek medical examination and evaluation.

Can Growth Hormone Injections Help with Height? Any Side Effects?
In recent years, many parents in South Korea have chosen to promote their children's height development through injections of "growth hormone." The "growth hormone" involves injecting a hormone into the child's body, and growth hormone is a protein secreted by the pituitary gland, primarily affecting height development and metabolism. Pediatric specialist Dr. Tsui states that growth hormone has been used in medicine for three to four decades, and its safety profile is relatively high. When used under the guidance and supervision of a doctor, significant problems typically do not arise. However, there are still some more serious and rare side effects, such as Slipped Capital Femoral Epiphysis, which may require surgical treatment.
